Quiz Bowl

Quiz Bowl?

What is Quiz Bowl?

What exactly is “Quiz Bowl?”  Six years ago it started as an OSSAA school competition like football, baseball, or any other sport.  Of course, rather than being an athletic competition, it was an academic competition.  Four students from Woodland would compete in a trivia competitions during the fall against other schools in the region (Pawnee, Morrison, Hominy, etc.).  Over the years, however, the Woodland Quiz Bowl Team has grown into an extracurricular club that does much more than just regional academic competitions.

The Woodland Quiz Bowl team meets twice a month on Tuesdays from 4:30-7pm.   From 4:30-5:30, we hold an “Academic Challenge” which is similar to the actual competitions that the students will do against other teams in the region.  To make it fun, students get rewarded for answering questions with candy as well as blue stars that get posted in the school hallway.  From 5:30-7pm, we hold an all out “Game night” where students play board games and video games on the Xbox 360 like Jeopardy and Trivial Pursuit.  We also have snacks every during practice to encourage as many students as possible to stop by.  On several occasions, more than 20 students have shown up for the Quiz Bowl game night, which is over one fifth of the entire school.

What can you do to help?  First, if your student hasn’t attended one of our events, you should encourage them to come out and give it a try.  Quiz bowl isn’t just for the “Brainiacs” at Woodland; it’s for everyone!!!  The questions we deal with range from math and science to movies, sports and popular music.  There is something for everyone.  Second, we could also use more snacks.  Things that we can store in the closet and use throughout the semester would be best: Two liter bottles of pop or lemonade, cookies, chips, paper plates, cups, and bags of small candies (like Halloween candy) for our Academic Challenges.  Several of our student athletes from various sports join us after their practices on Mondays and Tuesdays, and they always come hungry.  Any snack donation would be greatly appreciated.
